An air conditioner unit runs almost constantly during our hot summers. During the summer a number of air conditioning components will undergo a lot of stress leading to eventual failure. One component that takes on a lot of stress is the air conditioner’s compressor. It is the compressor’s job to move the refrigerant to the evaporator coil which creates the cool air that circulates throughout the home. As the air conditioner’s compressor begins to fail, it will give some warning signs. GA HVAC Experts will share what signs to look for when the air conditioner’s compressor begins to fail.
What Does a Bad AC Compressor Sound Like?
When a compressor is beginning to fail it can produce different noises. One noise that a compressor will give is a ticking like noise. This ticking noise usually begins just before the air conditioning system prepares to turn on or off. The ticking noise is due to a bad electrical relay which is struggling to send the signal to the compressor to switch on or off. Often it is the electrical relay to the compressor going out and not the actual compressor. The electrical relay may require replacement when ticking noises occur. Another common noise that signals a failing compressor is a rattling sound. When you hear a rattling noise that is coming from the air conditioner this is often screws from the compressor that has come loose and is now bouncing around inside the compressor. This can lead to a very dangerous situation which requires immediate attention. If you are hearing a rattling noise coming from the air conditioner, turn off the system and contact an HVAC service.
Why is My Air Conditioner Blowing Hot Air?
You can often tell there is a problem with the compressor by the condition of the air coming from the HVAC system. One of these air conditions to watch for is warm air coming from the air vent instead of cool air. When you hold your hand over the air vent only to feel warm air then there is an interruption in the cooling process. This interruption can be due to a few different reasons and one is caused by a failing compressor. Air flow is another type of condition that can tell you there is a problem with the compressor. Weak or low air flow occurs as the compressor’s condition gets worse and is ready to completely break down. Warm or weak air is a major indicator there is a problem with the compressor. In many cases the compressor needs to be replaced.
Water Around AC Unit Outside
One of the last signs a compressor gives as it begins to fail is a water leak or puddles of water around the air conditioner unit. When a compressor develops various problems it can leak out water or condensed refrigerant will leak out and puddle around the air conditioner unit. When the refrigerant leaks you may also notice a spike in your power bill. Water leaks or puddles can also cause damage to the home. When leaks or puddles develop around the air conditioner make sure to have it checked right away.
